2-Step Home Remedy For Getting Rid Of Your Toenail Fungus

Posted on: 6 February 2017

If you have problems with recurring toenail fungus, you may wonder if there is anything you can do at home to get rid of it before having to visit your podiatrist. If so, try the following two-step home remedy using natural ingredients to kill the growth on and around your toenail beds.

Step 1: Soak Your Feet In A Homemade Solution

This first step involves soaking your feet in a homemade solution that includes baking soda and lavender oil. The baking soda decreases the acidity of your skin and nails. Since fungi thrive in acidic environments, this makes it difficult for them to live. Lavender oil is a natural antifungal that helps to kill any existing toenail fungus.

To soak your feet, you will need a pan large enough for your feet to fit flat on the bottom. You will also need a clean, dry towel.

Fill your pan with enough hot water to submerge your feet. Then, add a half of a cup of baking soda and six drops of lavender oil. Let the water cool for about 15 minutes, which also gives the baking soda time to dissolve fully.

Put your feet in the water, and soak them for 15 minutes. Then, dry them off completely with your towel, and go on to the second step.

Step 2: Apply A Tea Tree Oil And Coconut Oil Mixture

After thoroughly drying off your feet, this next step involves rubbing your toenails and skin with a homemade mixture containing tea tree and coconut oils. The tea tree oil is a powerful natural antifungal that works to kill the fungi at their roots.

The coconut oil not only acts as a carrier oil, but its high fatty acid content works to break down the outer cells of the fungi. This allows the tea tree oil to penetrate deeper into the cells, making it more effective.

In a small bowl, mix together a teaspoon of coconut oil and five drops of tea tree oil. Mix the oils thoroughly with a toothpick. Then, spread a thin layer of the mixture on and under your nails, as well as the surrounding skin. Let the oil soak in for a few minutes, then massage the excess oil into the area.

Using the above home remedy every evening for several weeks should help you get rid of your toenail fungus. However, if you find that the fungus still remains, you may want to speak with a podiatrist about having laser nail treatment to have it removed.
